This indicator is calculated by dividing the number of reported incidences of violent crimes by the population. We multiply the result by 10,000. Violent crimes include murders and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. In counties with relatively few people, a small change in the number of violent crimes reported may have a significant effect on rates from year to year. (See the note about data comparability below.)
